As young as four years old, she realized she'd be a singing star. The talent she developed was cultivated due to her participation in the choir at church. While still in high-school the singer was regularly featured with Skyline Melodies. Around the same time, she began to work in nightclubs. Nancy was 17 when she completed high school and was enrolled in Ohio Central State College (now Central State University) for a year before quitting to pursue a career as a musician. She made her first recording with Rusty Bryants Carolyn Club Big Band, who she performed with from 1956 until 1958. Nancy began recording for Dot Records in 1956, when she was part of the band. Cannonball adderley advised her to go to New York in order to advance her career. The city she went to was The Big Town, New York in the year 1959. Within a month she got an offer to sing in The Blue Morocco Night Club situated on Boston Road in The Bronx where Adderley's agent heard her and signed her. In 1960, she was signed to Capitol Records, and that same year she issued her first single. Guess Who? Capitol released five Nancy Wilson records in just two years. Adderley influenced her to move away from R&B to the torch and jazz genres. Nancy Wilson and Cannonball Adderley joined forces in 1962 and led to her rise up on the charts.
