Jazz performer Nancy Wilson a three-time Grammy Award winner was born February 20 1937 in the city of Chillicothe, Ohio. Her parents were ironworker Olden Wilson, and former Lillian Ryan who worked as a housekeeper. Nancy was the first out of six kids. Nancy was influenced by her father's taste in music and records played in the family home. When she was young, she already had an idea of her identity and what she hoped to accomplish. The church choir helped develop her talent. In high school the singer began appearing often on Skyline Melodies. She was fifteen when she won the television talent show. In 1959 she moved to The Big Town. After a few weeks after, her manager was impressed by her voice and hired her. The contract was signed by Capitol Records in the year 1960. Initially focusing on rhythm and blues under Adderley's influence, she began to move away from R&B and began to embrace music from jazz and torch. Their collaboration in 1962 with Nancy Wilson and Cannonball Adderley was instrumental in propelling her to the top as she released her biggest smash Tell Me the Truth in 1963. It was this performance that led her to a spot at New York Coconut Grove in 1963, America's most popular nightclub.
